Review – Maxxis 4-Snow Tire’s

Good day Foolers & welcome to the newest addition to AF.COM – product reviews. I hope that this section of the site will help you guys make some informed choices when buying new products for your ATV & otherwise.

Being that old man winter has once again reared his ugly head – I’m going to start off this section with a review of Maxxis 4-Snow winter ATV tires.

We all know the bittersweet feeling of watching the pretty white powder falling from the sky. At first it’s fun to get out and rip some donuts or throw a snow roost in those first 3 inches of snow. Then the snow keeps falling and falling and before you know it your ATV is going nowhere fast.

This is where the Maxxis 4-Snow’s come in to help you stay riding your ATV long after your friends have decided they have to put theirs away until spring arrives again.

The tires are a paddle design (which can be rotated) tire & soft 2-ply rubber. They are designed so that the sidewall expands under speed making the tire grow taller and helping you move more easily through the snow. The rubber stays soft at extreme temperatures allowing them to expand no matter how cold it gets.

The actual design of the paddles must have been very well researched by Maxxis because these tires really work in the white stuff as advertised! I used these tires all last winter on the 300R & have tried them this winter on the TRX 250R – I am still amazed at how they perform when compared to a regular tire such as a Razr. (A video comparison of the Razr VS 4-Snow can be seen below)

Bear in mind that once mounting these tires your ATV will not instantly become a snowmobile – it will not not be able to tackle VERY deep snow effortlessly. However, once mounting these tires you will be able to handle 6 inch soft powder and groomed trails no different then if you were summer riding.

Obviously there are other methods out there for ATV’s to keep them going in the winter – mainly a ‘track’ system – but these track systems are high dollar and also rob a ton of horsepower. You need a big machine & deep pockets to run these track systems. (and good luck finding something that will work with our 1st and 2nd gen 250R trikes!)

The 4-snows are a very cheap alternative. They don’t rob you of any HP and will work on any ATV.

If you wanna keep the ride going this winter & don’t own a snowmobile then I suggest you go to your local dealer and mount up a set of Maxxis 4-Snows. For the price I am confident you will not be disappointed in the performance. (And an extra bonus for all you drag racers out there – they also work terrific in sand and hard pack as a racing tire)

Check out this video – 1st run is with Razr’s – listen to the engine work hard but the bike never gains any speed. The second run is with the 4-snows – the bike moves faster without working nearly as hard. (and the snow was deeper for this run!)

How do they compare to Ohtsu Pro-Wedge’s? I had a pair of these on my 350X and made it a totally different machine in the snow. I remember hitting some deep snow, and the tires actually dug BENEATH the snow, making a tunnel.

I’ve never had the pleasure of running the pro-wedges personally – but – from the info I’ve gathered, Maxxis used them as a platform to base the 4-snows on and tried to improve them.

Do they perform better? I can’t say. Maybe I should get a set of pro-wedges and do another back to back test on film. hmmmmm

Great question Bruce – thanks for the comment!
